With iOS 4.2 knocking on our doors, the infamous iPhone Dev Team is making sure jailbreakers and unlockers are well informed about the risks involved by updating to Apple’s stock iOS 4.2 IPSW.
In a recent blog update, the group of hackers responsible for PwnageTool confirms that all devices on all iOS firmware versions can be jailbroken, but that jailbreakers should refrain themselves from updating to iOS 4.2 until Cydia and PwnageTool are updated.
“By all accounts, we’re within a few days of Apple’s official public release of Firmware 4.2,” the Team writes. “Here’s what you need to know.”
“Thanks to geohot’s limera1n exploit, and our original pwnage2 exploit, and @pod2g’s ipod2g-MC exploit, absolutely all devices at all iOS firmware versions are capable of being jailbroken,” the iPhone Dev Team elaborates.
A piece of advice from the notorious hackers goes: “The untethered jailbreak of those very latest FWs and latest devices depends on @comex hacks. His hacks so far extend only to 4.1 and 4.2beta3. He’s working on a way to extend it to 4.2 and beyond. Just wait for him to work out his method.”
Unlocked iPhone owners, however, should not update when iOS 4.2 is released, the hackers say. They will need to stay put in order to preserve their unlock, according to the Team’s latest update
“iPhone 3G and 3GS unlockers will be covered by our upcoming unlock. Stay away from any updates to Apple FW until our official release and you’ll be okay. Just stay away from all Apple IPSWs,” the Team warns.
According to their post, “iPhone4 unlockers are not left out in the cold. @sherif_hashim has found some very promising avenues to pursue. Those will be explored as soon as possible after all the 4.2 madness.”
So, while all iOS firmware versions can be jailbroken on all devices at the moment, not all iOS firmware on all devices are capable of being unlocked, according to the Dev Team’s latest update.
To be perfectly clear, there are currently no unlocks for iPhone 4 with iOS 4.2, but the Dev Team is already hard at work trying to crack it.
iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS will be the first to benefit from an unlock available first, but they still need to avoid updating to iOS 4.2 for now, the Team says.
